I definitely recognize the symptoms your elder gentleman experienced--I've had post-nasal drip for the better part of 20 years with frequent sinus problems. I'm going to try your Sambu, but a quick question--are there any concerns with it if I'm breastfeeding? And is it safe for use in otherwise healthy children? My son, 3, seems to have inherited my propensity for sinus trouble.

Dear Amy Sage,

Here is the ingredient list as found on the Flora Company's website:
www.florahealth.com

What's in SambuGuard?

Elder flowers (Sambucus nigra): The active components in elder flowers exert a positive influence on the body's well-being by strengthening the immune system and providing the tools needed to maintain good health.* These components are naturally extracted from the blossoms for their health-enhancing benefits.* This powerful extract from elder flowers support the respiratory tract and help maintain healthy lung function.* Elder flowers also have a soothing effect on the throat when experiencing occasional throat irritation.*

Elderberries (Sambucus nigra): These therapeutic berries give SambuGuard a rich and delicious flavor that tastes like a mixture of black currants, blueberries and raspberries. The "flavonoids" in elderberries have a positive influence on proper cell function by helping to maintain cell integrity.* Elderberries also have a mild detoxifying and cleansing effect.*

Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea) plant concentrate (22:1): Echinacea is a proven overall immune system booster that supports the body's natural abilities to maintain good health.* Echinacea guards the bloodstream by maintaining a strong circulatory system.* The Echinacea used in SambuGuard is pressed from fresh organically-grown plants shortly after harvesting. This method ensures a maximum amount of active ingredients in the finished product.

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) & Acerola Cherry (Malpighia punicifolia) fruit powder: Vitamin C is a well-established antioxidant that protects the body from day-to-day wear and tear inflicted by stress and pollution. It is extremely effective at strengthening the immune system.* Acerola cherry powder (native to the West Indies) is added to SambuGuard because of its high content of natural vitamin C. The amount of vitamin C in a tablespoon (15 ml) of SambuGuard meets the recommended daily intake.

Honey: SambuGuard is naturally sweetened with honey.

The Elder product that is my personal favorite and the one I spoke about in most detail in this article is the Sambu Wild Grown Elderberry Concentrate. It has only Elder flower, Elder berry and honey. Yum!

Did I mention how good it is in sparkling mineral water? It's like having an Elder berry soda!
And mixed into warm water as a tea is wonderful, too. (Be sure the water's not hot, as you don't want to 'cook' those beneficial flavonoids!)

I'm quite fond of elderberries, and recently bought some Sambu Guard myself just as a boost to my immune system over the winter, since my cedar allergies usually spawn a cold or two. But my Sambu Guard has no elderflowers... it's a blend of echinacea, vitamin C and elderberry. Is there a different type that's available online with elderflower that could help me put down the OTC drugstore meds?

You have an extremely informative site, by the way!
